Deep Water Pipe Lay Systems

SAS was one of the first companies to engineer and manufacture Pipe Laying Equipment for deep water applications. SAS first project was for Heerema?s Balder during the late 1980?s. With this project Heerema was the first contractor to use a J-lay system with integration of Pipe Tensioners. As for S-lay, on board the J-lay barge or vessel pipe joints are welded into a pipe string. This string is limited in length up to six joints (approx. 72mtr.) and supported by pipe rollers mounted on deck and loaded onto a loading arm, which brings the pipe joint into the J-lay tower and into the Pipe Tensioner(s). The Pipe Tensioners hold the pipe while laying it vertically from the tower into the sea. A complete pipe lay system, typically consists of:
